Nigeria customs service, Ogun 1 Area command has debunked claims making the rounds that the command is allowing smugglers to bring in Arms and Ammunition and other Prohibited items into the country through its border jurisdiction.

A statement coming from the command’s  Public Relation Officer, Hammed Oloyede, a Deputy superintendent of customs, said such allegation was a calculated attempt at tarnishing the image and efforts being put to use in curbing crime and smuggling within its border jurisdiction as it says the command won’t relent in their efforts at Putting smugglers at bay.

The statement put-further; ‘ the attention of Nigeria customs service Ogun 1 Area command has been drawn to the malicious allegation levelled against it during a purported press conference jointly addressed by one Mr Damilola Simeon Kehinde and Ogunrombi Gbemileke and that which was published on sun online news of Thursday 26th of August 2021, with unfounded allegation levelled against the command ‘ saying it was allowing importation of smuggled arms and ammunition and another item into the country.

The command wishes to debunk the allegation and hereby state that there has never been a time where arms and ammunition are allowed to be smuggled into the country through Ogun state and that such would not be allowed in whatever form”.

“The command has since forfeited numerous illegal routes through which contraband is being smuggled into the country with aggressive patrols, stepping up its anti-smuggling operations in the state to checkmate the nefarious activities of enemies of the states”.

He said what remains their figment of imagination was the unfortunate display of ignorance “saying activities of smuggling was taking place during daytime’’, adding that tightened security architecture in the state today coming from customs and other security agencies will however not permit smuggling of contraband and other prohibited items at night talk less of during broad daylight.

“It is on record that since the resumption of comptroller Peter kolo, records of achievements in the command in both areas of revenue generation and anti-smuggling activities remains a testimony, and as such, media can testify, hence all activities regarding smuggling are being given on monthly basis in other that Nigerians are aware of what the command stood for”.    

“The command have recorded one thousand, five hundred seizures of various contrabands and prohibited where a spectacular seizure of forty-six thousand four hundred and ninety-one bags of foreign rice was made in the command between  the month of January 2021 and August 2021 where about twenty suspects  are currently  undergoing trial for various smuggling offence at the federal high court sitting in Abeokuta”

We, therefore, advising the that students who are claiming what is unfounded should rather focus and concentrate on their studies and school activities in other that they graduate in record time and desist from being used as the service implore them to channel their energy towards creating a better life for themselves, Oloyede said.

He said those spewing this, were nowhere to be found when officers and men of Ogun 1 area custom command are on daily basis being attacked with dangerous weapons like AK47 rifles, locally produced guns, charms, and also paying the ultimate price and inflicting injuries by daredevil smugglers.

The general public should know that the allegation remains baseless unfounded and mischievous adding that the whole idea is a calculated attempt at causing a distraction to our operations and security architecture in ogun state and the country and should be disregarded as it won’t be deterred in ensuring and focusing on its anti-smuggling duties, the state reads!
