Operatives of Anambra state Police state command have arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Sunday Nwadiagba, who was caught allegedly raping a 75-year-old woman.
It was gathered that the incident happened in the victim’s farmland in Nkwelle Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a press statement on Saturday.
Ikenga said the woman had alerted passers-by by raising the alarm, which attracted a mob that almost lynched the suspect. The suspect was later rescued by police operatives and arrested.
He said, “The Anambra State operatives collaborating with security agents at about 4 pm on 24/6/2022 rescued from mob action and arrested one Sunday Nwadiagba ‘M’ aged 30 years from Eyiba, Ebonyi State for allegedly raping a 75 years old woman living in Nkwelle Awkuzu.
“Preliminary information reveals that the suspect was caught in the act on the victim’s farm before the old woman’s scream got the attention of passers-by and neighbours.
“Before his arrest, an angry mob had already beaten him to a stupor. Meanwhile, the victim and the suspect have been taken to the hospital for medical attention.”
The police spokesman said the Commissioner of Police condemned mob action, adding that anybody caught committing a criminal act should be taken to the nearest police station.
