The
Lagos State Police specifically it’s Area“L” Command whose jurisdiction covers all
communities within its coastal region held security partnership meeting with
stakeholders and inhabitants of ilashe, ilado, Takwa-bay igbologun Osolu
kingdom snake-island, ibasa, itu-Agon and “imose” yesterday.
The meeting was anchored on challenging issues of cultism, pipeline vandals and
other pockets of violence arising from land conflicts and a threat to the security of
live and property within the habitats.

The
Area ‘L’ commander, Acp Ben Osuji in his remark, told the large gathering  what the police want is its cooperation with
the coastal communities and the need to be alert at all times especially when
in a chaotic situation.

“Please
be informed that as new crimes are emerging, and it is our duty to inform all in
the way it’s being perpetrated hence the need for community partnership”.

Continuing,
Osuji said the need for this development becomes very imperative because of the
fact that the Lagos state police command has launched different platforms to deal with security issues  apart
from operation puff Adder, which is known as “operation flush”, and that which the command needed to sound the alarm on, in other for the stakeholders in the
communities to be aware of,  and take meaningful advantage of it.

“Cultism
is fast becoming a menace, “I mean, there can’t be any sense finding our youths
engaging in this act, dispossessing inhabitants from their belongings and yet,
nothing is being done to stem the tide, he queried”.

“We
shall address both issues of cultism and other pending traditional issues in
Itu-Agon community which comes with land disputes”, the commander stated.

Acp
Osuji said there is no spirit that can help resolve issues of land disputes other than
taking advantage of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), while urging them
to see more of that as the best option and choice other than conceding to what one
of the stakeholder said while answering a question that the litigation over
inagbe island traditional disputes had lasted them for over eighteen years and still
continues.

The
Commander added;  community partnership
remains golden as  the Area command is interested in what the Divisional Police Officers
within their jurisdiction are doing, adding that what is obtainable in Lagos
state police command when it comes to emergency  response time is within two, five and ten
minutes on any perceived threat, their relationship with the police, proactive emergency
response and other ingredients that must be inclusive in nature when it comes
to a partnership with the police within the jurisdictional command.

One
of the stakeholder from irede ask if, after giving sensitive  information to police, whether those that
provided it would be treated with confidence, to the admiration of the
stakeholders, the area commander said all information will be treated with
utmost confidentiality.

Another stakeholder, Chief Femi Adele, the Bale of irede decries the way Takwa-bay Divisional  police officer was  responding to an emergency, saying there is  the need to improve, providing  a solution thereafter, a community inhabitant from same irede  believes the reason such response time can see the
light of the day is requesting for speed boats through their traditional rulers
to the state government which according to him, remains the only solution to emergency response.

A youth leader from Ilado, Shuaibu Sanni suggested that the police authority should also  think of providing more police post in their community for proximal advantage
in other to enhance effective community policing, adding that from Takwa-bay to
sangbokoji remains very far, citing an instance when infighting broke out in one of their community that eventually comes with severe injuries which according to him, should have been averted  if
there was a proximal sight of a police post that indeed would have been avoided.

Adebanjo
Esanmore, a community inhabitant from itu-Agan agrees with an earlier speaker that
the partnership must put into consideration for a proximal police presence to serve
both sangbokoji and irede.

On
the issue bordering on land conflict, oba Musiliu Adio, the Onisiwo urge the
Area commander to ensure the security of lives and property as some of his subjects
threatened are still having properties in areas there exist traditional tussles.

Rulers present include the Onisiwo, Oba Musiliu Adio, onilado of ilado ofori
of ibeshe and Bale of Irede.
