The Lagos state police command has justified their action against a scene in video footage showing how men without uniform were seen manhandling a suspect, forcing him into a commercial cab within igando metropolis.
The video footage went viral on social media specifically on Instagram allowing Nigerians to vent their anger in the way the suspect was manhandled and forced into a commercial cab given the impression that there can never be any justification for such action essentially in the what played out in the presence of a police inspector as shown in the viral video footage.
Justifying its action in a statement, the police public relation officer sp Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that the said person was later identified as Stephen Ade adding that the 23-year-old suspect was nervous he and one other person took to their heels after two of them sighted the unexpected presence of policemen as the team gave them a fierce chase, while in the process, Stephen threw a micro wallet to his partner who escaped through another direction where two of the policemen chased the escapee but to no avail.
He identified the policeman in the viral video as inspector Stephen inumanu attached to igando police station and that he was deployed on a routine stop and search duty on 18th of September, 2020, with two other team members specifically at isuti road in Egan area at igando, Lagos state.
In a statement titled Igando Trending Video of Alleged Brutality: The Fact and that which was sighted by urban Express New correspondent quoted Adejobi as saying inspector Stephen inumama in a spirit of cooperation, was assisted by two spirited civilians who witness the episode, chased and arrested the said Stephen Ade who practically refused arrest as captured in the viral video, but with the aid of members of the public, he was subdued within the minimum use of force without assault whatsoever from the arms-bearing inspector.
Adejobi Added “ without mincing word, the video was carefully edited by the sender to remove barrage of insult the suspects hauled on the police officer in the presence of civilians as customary of mischief-makers”
“The command wishes to state categorically that the trending video was borne out of mischief to discredit the collective image of the police by folk who are uncomfortable with police presence on the road regardless of how courteous”
“The command, therefore, urges the general public to regard the video as baseless and calculated attempt to malign the efforts of the Nigeria police in maintaining law and order in the society while the command reiterates its commitment to discharging its duties with diligence”
