Operatives of Ogun state custom 1 command have arrested a motorcycle loaded with 50kg along Ketu Yewa but that indeed did not come without resistant coming from the smugglers.
Explaining further on what transpired, the Ogun 1 customs Public Relation Officer DSC Oloyede said in a statement that a combine patrol team of the command went on information patrol around sele Owode, Ketu road along Yewa north local government in Ogun state and intercepted a motorcycle loaded with foreign bags of rice with 50 kilograms each.
Oloyede said the rice was taken to the patrol base leaving some officers behind to be on surveillance for information.
“On reaching a bush path of the same area, some suspected smugglers on a motorcycle, laden with some bags of 5kg foreign parboiled rice, on sighting officers, the ran away in convoy to evade arrest.
Oloyede said given the level of their speed and the state of the road, one of the suspected smugglers somersaulted; hit his head on the ground, while the motorcycle carrying those rice fell on him and was discovered dead on the spot.
“Consequently, the corpse was taken to the mortuary by the police, while the motorcycle with the uncustomed goods was taken to a police station for further investigation”.
However, some unscrupulous youths resorted to unleashing mayhem on custom personnel, burnt a patrol base, and took away one of the intercepted motorcycles
The CPRO said on getting the report, the customs Area controller immediate called for reinforcement from other custom patrol team, border drill and Nigeria police whose combine effort brought the situation under control as, at the time of this report, normalcy has returned to the area.
