The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning
and Urban Development has reacted promptly to those violating planning permit as
it sealed 56 unapproved construction sites in the state.
A statement made available to Urban
Express News Online through its Director of public affairs, Mr Mukaila Sanusi; said
the action was taken in other to ensure zero tolerance for unapproved buildings
that has been encouraging building collapse.
He said the commissioner of physical
planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako is alarmed at the rate of
unapproved and illegal development going on in Ikoyi and Banana Island and as
justification asked property owners in the affected areas to come forth with
their planning permit granted for their building construction accompanied with pieces of evidence of their stage certification obtained from the Lagos state building
control agency (LASBCA) or have their
This disclosure, according to the
ministry’s Public Affairs Director was made during the commissioner’s routine
on special enforcement operation on Saturday 13th June 2020.
Salako was quoted as saying that the rate at which Developers in those said areas flout planning laws by going ahead to erect
buildings without a necessary permit are disturbing; adding that the act is inimical
to the Sustainable development of our environment as it must be curtailed in
the interest of all.
“Property owners in Ikoyi and Banana Island
must produce on-demand their planning permit and evidence of state
certification or risk their property being sealed up in furtherance of the
state policy on zero tolerance for illegal developments”
“The exercise would be extended to other
parts of the state to send strong signals of government’s determination to
guard the state operative development plans and curb illegal physical
development, stating that over 56 buildings/building construction sites have
been sealed since the beginning of the Special Enforcement Operation midweek”.
“Our enforcement team is a joint operation
that consist of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State
Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Lagos State Building Control
Agency (LASBCA) and other special operation teams in Governor’s office to sensitize
the built environment in Lagos state”
“Therefore, we urged those whose property
was sealed due to these infractions to report to the Office of the
Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Secretariat,
Alausa, Ikeja, to perfect their documents”.
