….Says Clampdown To Start Nationwide ahead of Edo, Ondo Election
The inspector General of Police, IGP Adamu Mohammed has ordered all commissioners of police throughout the country to identify, isolate, disarm and prosecute offenders in possession of firearms ahead of edo and Ondo Election.
A statement made available to Urban Express News Online through the Force Public Relation Officer Dcp Frank Mba said; “as part of preparation toward the forth coming gubernatorial election in Edo and Ondo states, as well as effort by the police high command to curb the proliferation of firearms in the country, the inspector general of police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has ordered commissioners of police in the federation and the federal capital territory to immediately initiate appropriate action to identify, isolate, disarm, arrest and prosecute any individuals or group in possession of prohibited firearms”.
Mba said the directive becomes necessary against the backdrop of the deliberate arming and movement of political thugs and other criminal elements across the country adding that the directive is targeted at addressing the proliferation and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms in the country which is contrary to the provisions of chapter F.28LFN 2004 of the firearm act.
The FPPRO said commissioners of police in all the states of the federation and the federal capital territory have been directed to immediately convene an enlightenment meeting of all vigilante groups and quasi security outfits in the county in order to ensure that their activities are in conformity with the extants laws guiding their establishment and operations
He said the inspector general of police, while observing that several civil groups vigilante, quasi states and regional security outfits under various guise are arming themselves with prohibited firearms and weapons in contravention of the provision of the firearm act, notes that the trend if unchecked, will pose serious threat to national security
