The Commissioner of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako has assured Makoko inhabitants that government will not uproot them when the time is ripe for it to regenerate the sprawling waterfront community which covers mainland and somolu local government area of the state.
The assurance was given when residents of the area paid a curtsey visit to the commissioner in his office.
A statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi quoted the commissioner as saying the administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-olu being people-oriented, had never been in support of displacing inhabitants from their homes even as it becomes imperative to upgrade slums in the state.
“The people had always been central to the developmental efforts of the state government as encapsulated in the THMES Agenda as Makoko would not deviate from its objectives”.
He said the commissioner stated further that in order to guide the development of the axis, Lagos state had developed an action Area plan, covering Oko-oba and makoko, while the State Urban Renewal Agency (LSURA) had declared and adopted makoko as an urban regeneration Area, alongside ten other communities in the state.
The statement put further that the General Manager of Lagos State urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Ms Ajibike Shomade equally urged members of the community to ensure their plans for development of their community complement government proposals.
“Baale of Makoko, chief Yusuf kumayo expressed satisfaction with the resolve of the state government and pledge cooperation of his community with the government while Mr Morgan Chapman one of the guests praised the efforts of the state government and solicit for community participation toward redevelopment of makoko”.
