The Professional Footballers Association, PFA, is seeking a change to the rules, following an injury to Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi.

Earlier this week, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma after an emergency abdominal surgery.

The Nigerian striker had collided with a post during their 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

The injury happened after assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis delayed in raising the flag to indicate offside against Anthony Elanga.

PFA, who have been in touch with Awoniyi’s family, are concerned about the incident and are ready to take action.

They want play to be stopped when there is an obvious offside rather than allow it to continue and run the risk of serious injury, as happened with Awoniyi.

The PFA will now speak with the PGMOL and also law makers IFAB and it is understood that both bodies are willing to listen and review the set-up.

The conversations will centre around striking a balance when players are offside and “learn lessons” from what has happened.
