American citizens in Nigeria have a deadline of July 31, 2025, to resolve their visa issues or risk facing stiff penalties from the Nigerian government.

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had announced that foreigners who overstay their visas will now face stricter measures.

The punishments include daily fines and long-term bans from re-entering the country.

“US citizens currently in Nigeria who have overstayed their visa are strongly encouraged to fix their stay through the amnesty portal before July 31, 2025,” the US Embassy said in a statement on its website.

It added that failure to do so could “result in significant financial penalties and long-term restrictions on re-entry to Nigeria.”

A daily fine of $15 has been set by the Ministry of Interior, effective May 1, 2025.

However, there is an amnesty period to sort out outstanding issues without paying any fines, and it ends on July 31.
