A former Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, has claimed that ex-Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi tried to punch him.

The incident happened following the infamous league game between the Blues and Manchester United in October 2012.

The 50-year-old was accused of racially abusing Mikel Obi during the match at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea claimed Clattenburg had called the Nigerian a “monkey”, but he was subsequently cleared by the FA.

But the FA handed a ban to Mikel Obi and also fined him £60,000 for threatening Clattenburg.

Speaking on Undr The Cosh, Clattenburg claimed Mikel Obi burst into the referee’s dressing room after the game and threw punches at him.

After he ducked the punches, Clattenburg says the player then tried to pin him to the wall.

He said: “There was a bit of commotion outside the dressing room door [after the Chelsea vs Man United game].

“As I opened the door, John Obi Mikel came bursting through and started swinging punches.

“I ducked. He tried to pin me against the wall and went: “F****** h***!”
