Leeds United defender, Isaac Schmidt is no longer eligible to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
This comes after the Swiss Football Association successfully secured the international future of the Leeds United loanee, beating the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in the race for the player.
Schmidt made a cap-tying appearance for Switzerland on Monday, in their 3-0 win against Slovenia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at St. Jakob Stadium.
The 25-year-old was born in Lausanne to a Swiss-German father and a Nigerian mother.
Schmidt was eligible to represent the national teams of Nigeria and Germany before his competitive debut for The Red Crosses against Slovenia.
He came off the bench in the second half to replace midfielder Silvan Widmer, a substitution that officially sealed his spot in the Switzerland team over Nigeria and Germany, respectively.
Schmidt has now followed in the footsteps of the likes of Manuel Akanji and Noah Okafor, all of whom were eligible to play for Nigeria before cap-tying appearances for Switzerland.
He is currently on loan at German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen from Leeds United.
