The Delta State Police Command, led by CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has confirmed the arrest of Austin Ofeoritse over the alleged murder of his nephew, Mr Billy Tenite, in a dispute over properties.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the report in a telephone chat with Urban Express News correspondent in Warri.

The Police spokesperson said, “The report is confirmed and the investigation is still ongoing.”

The suspect is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba.

The incident occurred on January 17, 2025, at Enerhen in Uvwie Local Government Area. The suspect allegedly used an iron rod to strike his nephew on the forehead, causing him to collapse. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The suspect is the younger brother of the victim’s mother, who passed away in 2010.

Sources revealed that the suspect harboured resentment toward the deceased, the only son of his parents, who inherited his late mother’s properties. The suspect reportedly felt excluded from controlling the wealth left by his sister.

As a result, he allegedly plotted to end the victim’s life, which ultimately led to the tragic incident.

The victim’s family has reportedly intervened, arguing that the case should be treated as manslaughter rather than murder, emphasizing that it is a family matter and should be resolved privately.

The pregnant wife of the deceased is said to be in severe emotional distress as she mourns her husband’s untimely death.

A human rights activist, Comrade Israel Joe, has taken to his Facebook page to insist that the suspect must be charged with murder by the Delta State Police Command.

Comrade Joe also appealed to CP Abaniwonda to ensure justice is served. He stated that the Command must charge the suspect with murder to uphold justice.

According to Comrade Joe, this is the only way justice can be achieved in the matter.

He emphasised that the case is now between the Police and the suspect, asserting that it has gone beyond a family dispute.
