The Lagos State Government has directed that 18 motorists recently caught driving against traffic undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluations as part of their prosecution process.

The directive, announced by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, is part of a renewed enforcement strategy aimed at curbing dangerous road practices and instilling discipline among road users. According to LASTMA, the affected drivers were arrested for what it described as “reckless and deliberate violations” of the law, commonly referred to as one-way driving. Beyond facing trial, they will now be subjected to mental health assessments to determine their psychological fitness for road use.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the state government’s decision was in line with international best practices in traffic management and safety psychology.

“The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish. Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order,” Bakare-Oki said.

Despite repeated campaigns on safe driving and road use, the agency noted that one-way driving remains rampant in Lagos, often causing accidents, severe traffic congestion, and damage to public infrastructure.

Bakare-Oki emphasised that the new policy is both corrective and preventive, aimed at reforming behaviour and deterring others from similar violations.

“This initiative goes beyond traffic enforcement. It reflects the state’s vision to safeguard lives, promote responsible motoring, and maintain order on our roads,” he added.
