The New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has won the Bagwai/Shanono State Assembly by-election held on Saturday.

The Returning Officer, Professor Hassan Adamu Shitu, announced the result at the Bagwai INEC collation centre early Sunday. NNPP candidate Ali Lawal Al-Hassan scored 16,198 votes, defeating All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate Abdullahi Ahmed Muhammed, who received 5,347 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Suleiman Muhammad Lawan, came third with 159 votes. A total of 11 parties contested the election.

The seat became vacant following the death of Hallilu Kundila, a former APC member of the State Assembly.
