Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt has responded to the criticism directed at his manager, Ruben Amorim, over the team’s disappointing results.

The Dutchman backed his manager, insisting that the players alone should take the blame for their poor performances, especially against Brentford last weekend.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 the previous weekend, and on their return to action last weekend, they were beaten 3-1 by Brentford.

Within 20 minutes of the game on Saturday, Igor Thiago had already netted twice for the home side before Benjamin Sesko pulled one back for the visitors.

However, a missed Bruno Fernandes penalty and a stoppage-time Mathias Jensen goal saw Brentford run away with all three points.

De Ligt said the formation being used by his manager is not the problem, insisting that the players should be taking the blame.

“Of course, I mean it’s always easy to look at the manager, but in the end the players on the pitch have to do it,” said the Dutch defender.

“We can’t say the goals we conceded, or the chances we conceded, are because of what… I don’t know, you guys always talk about the system.

“That also has a lot to do with focus, concentration, and, if that’s lacking in key moments, it’s going to make a difference.

“Really disappointed because all week we were speaking about keeping the momentum going, getting another win under our belt.

“If you lose this game, it’s a big blow, obviously. A lot of the time, it is the same song.

“We were short in key moments where we made the wrong decisions.”
