A speeding vehicle has killed a female pedestrian at the Mosalasi Roundabout along New Ipaja Road, Ipaja area of Lagos State.
Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle, a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV, was travelling at an extremely high speed.
The vehicle lost control, veered off the main carriageway and mounted the pedestrian walkway, where it smashed into the female pedestrian.
The impact proved instantly fatal for the woman. The force of the collision propelled the vehicle into a nearby livestock business, where it severely damaged the perimeter fence and a large advertising billboard.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene but was promptly apprehended by officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to security operatives from the Gowon Estate Command for further action.
The remains of the deceased have been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force for appropriate procedures, while the driver remains in custody and is undergoing interrogation as investigations continue.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, conveyed his condolences to the victim’s family, describing the tragedy as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving.
He urged all motorists to prioritise routine vehicle checks, particularly their braking systems, to prevent avoidable loss of life.
“This is a deeply sorrowful occurrence that underscores the grave consequences of reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki stated. “We mourn with the family of the deceased and pray earnestly that the Almighty grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
