The only opposition member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Osafile Stella, has disclosed that she has faced ridicule over her decision to defect from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, rather than align with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Osafile made the revelation in an interview with newsmen after Monday’s plenary sitting of the Assembly.
She acknowledged that the taunts have been persistent but said she has learnt to cope with the realities of political life, stressing that criticism is unavoidable in public office.
“Of course, there are taunts, but in politics, you must develop a thick skin. Without that, it is difficult to move forward,” she said.
Addressing questions on whether the ADC has guaranteed her a return ticket ahead of the next election, the lawmaker said her political decisions are driven by the wishes of her constituents.
She added that the party is not new and already has functional structures in place.
“The ADC is well established. The structures are there. My people encouraged me to take this step. It was the constituents I represent who asked me to move to the ADC,” she explained.
On the role of religion in governance, Osafile emphasised that Nigeria operates a secular system, noting that political participation cuts across religious boundaries.
“Your personality will always reflect in how you play politics. After God’s authority comes government, so you cannot distance yourself from it,” she said.
Osafile, who currently chairs the House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, also dismissed suggestions that her opposition status has exposed her to discrimination within the Assembly.https://urbanexpresslive.com/im-being-goaded-for-refusing-to-join-the-ruling-party-lagos-only-opposition-lawmaker/
She said the Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has remained professional and impartial in the discharge of his duties.
“When I campaigned, I emphasised capacity, competence and character. I believe the Speaker understands his role and assigns responsibilities appropriately. I have not experienced any form of discrimination,” Stella said.
