In the early hours of Saturday, militants from the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, launched a deadly attack on Geidam town in Yobe State, killing one resident and causing widespread destruction, according to multiple sources.
The assault began at around 3:30 am when the insurgents stormed the town, firing explosives indiscriminately and terrorising residents.
Intelligence sources shared with counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama that the attackers destroyed properties and set two vehicles belonging to Nigerian Customs officials ablaze.
The militants were said to have desecrated the grave of Khalifah Ayiloma, in Kolori Ward, setting the gravesite on fire.
They also attacked the home of 60-year-old Dahiru Muhammadu, a night watchman stationed near Geidam Polytechnic. Muhammadu sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and was rushed to Geidam Specialist Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
