Activist politician, Aisha Yesufu, has said Nigerian students should stop paying for the West African Examination Council (WAEC, and National Examination Council (NECO, fees.
Yesufu said good and quality education is the right of all Nigerian students.
His remark comes as the Federal Government approved the sum of N50,000 for WAEC and NECO fees.
The Federal Ministry of Education gave approval for the increase of WAEC and NECO fees for the Senior Secondary Certification Examination (SSCE) to N50,000 per candidate starting from 2027.
The approval was contained in a new memo dated June 18, 2026. It was signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Adeniji Ibrahim, on behalf of the ministry.
Reacting, Yesufu wrote on X: “No student in Nigeria should be paying for WAEC and NECO. Good quality education should be a right that Nigerian children enjoy.
“Primary and secondary education is more beneficial to the state than the people. The cost of an uneducated populace is too high for a State.”
