The Edo State Police Command has arrested an officer identified as Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi and three civilians for alleged involvement in acts of extortion, brutality, and robbery against citizens in Benin City.

Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Command, disclosed this on Sunday in a statement made available to newsmen.

Yamu gave the names of the arrested civilian suspects as Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis and Enoma Agho.

He alleged that the civilians have been collaborating with the Police Inspector serving in the Command to terrorise residents of the city through acts of extortion and harassment.

The arrest of the suspects followed a viral video in which a victim alleged that he was abducted by policemen and subjected to intimidation, his phone and belongings forcefully taken.

The spokesperson of the Command explained that, acting on the complaint and other related reports, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, directed that the perpetrators be identified and arrested without delay.

According to Yamu, on August 15, 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver Colored Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items.

Yamu stated that the Commissioner of Police, who strongly condemns the shameful and criminal conduct, vowed that the suspects would face the full wrath of the law.

“CP Monday Agbonika has made it clear that there will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the Force, reiterating the Command’s zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, and unprofessional conduct.

“The Command further issues a stern warning to all officers that any policeman found engaging in misconduct, extortion, brutality, or any form of corrupt practice will be swiftly dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted in line with the laws of the land,” he said.

The Command called on members of the public, particularly the victim in the viral video, to come forward and assist investigators with credible information to ensure that justice is served.

He assured that the Command remains unwavering in its duty to protect lives and property, restore public trust and uphold the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
