No fewer than 17 pupils have been confirmed dead following a fire incident at the Hillside Endarasha Primary School, Central Kenya.

Urban Express News Online  learnt that the unfortunate incident occurred on Thursday night when the pupils were asleep.

The spokesperson of the Kenyan Police, Resila Onyango confirmed the development to local media on Friday morning.

According to the police, a team of investigators has been deployed to the school to unravel the remote cause of the fire incident.

Similarly, the Kenya Red Cross said it is providing psychosocial support services to the pupils, teachers and affected families, and has set up a tracing desk at the school.

BBC reports that there are fears that the death toll could rise as more than a dozen others have been taken to hospital with severe burns.
