Former England coach Stuart Pearce has criticised Arsenal winger Noni Madueke, accusing him of ‘giving up’ during their World Cup victory over DR Congo.

Thomas Tuchel’s team appeared to be on the verge of a humiliating World Cup elimination at the hands of DR Congo, who maintained a lead for more than an hour following Brian Cipenga’s early goal.

However, England captain Harry Kane salvaged the situation with two late goals, first heading in Anthony Gordon’s cross and then scoring a decisive winner.

Kane’s remarkable performance propelled the Three Lions into the last-16 of the World Cup, where they are set to face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca.

Despite advancing to the next stage, there is a prevailing belief that England must significantly elevate their performance levels to compete against formidable teams such as France, Argentina, and Brazil in their quest for a first World Cup title in 60 years.

Madueke was among several England players who faced criticism for their performances against DR Congo, and former Three Lions manager Pearce expressed that he was ‘really disappointed’ with the Arsenal winger.

The ex-Chelsea player Madueke began the match but was substituted for Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka with thirty minutes left to play after a lacklustre showing.

Pearce said on talkSPORT as the Arsenal title winner was subbed off by Tuchel, “I’ve got to say I was really disappointed with Noni Madueke.

“I was impressed by him in the first half; I thought he was outstanding at times. But in the second half, I think he took the easy option, got tired and gave up.”

Saka is way ahead of Madueke in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order but came into the World Cup under a fitness cloud.
