Lagos State Government has apprehended a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver in connection with the death of a pedestrian, identified as Elizabeth Fresh, who was struck by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction, Ikeja.The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, confirmed that the fatal accident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company under its regulation.According to a statement obtained on January 12, 2026, and signed by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the driver initially fled the scene but was later tracked down and handed over to the police.“Eyewitness accounts confirmed that Miss Fresh was hit by a high-capacity bus, which has since been identified as part of the Red and White Bus fleet,” the statement said.LAMATA said it immediately reached out to the victim’s family to offer condolences.The family reportedly demanded that the driver be apprehended and prosecuted.“The authority assured the family that it was working closely with the bus operator to ensure the driver’s identification, arrest, and handover to law enforcement for appropriate legal action,” the statement added.Following official directives, the driver was presented by the bus company on Monday and formally handed over to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of the company’s management.Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA reiterated its commitment to safety and accountability across all transport services under its jurisdiction.“As a responsible agency of the Lagos State Government, LAMATA is deeply saddened by the loss of any life and remains dedicated to maintaining safety and accountability across all regulated transport services,” the statement said.The authority also advised pedestrians to make use of designated pedestrian bridges when crossing BRT corridors, cautioning that failure to do so continues to put lives at risk.
