Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has emphasised that the N4.237 trillion 2026 budget proposal must align closely with residents’ needs, addressing pressing social and economic challenges.

Obasa made the remarks on Tuesday during Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s formal presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill at the Lagos Assembly complex.

Governor Sanwo-olu submitted a N4.237 trillion plan, dubbed the “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” ahead of lawmakers for review and approval.

The Speaker highlighted that the budget should bolster economic resilience, improve welfare, strengthen security, and facilitate sustainable infrastructure development across all communities in Lagos.

He noted that the state’s current stature is the result of ‘hard work, creativity, and laws that encourage innovation and excellence among our people.

Reflecting on the Assembly’s achievements under his leadership, Obasa added that over the past decade, the legislature has enacted more than 100 laws and passed over 1,500 resolutions aimed at enhancing governance and improving residents’ lives.

Obasa commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for presenting a comprehensive fiscal plan that mirrors Lagos’ commitment to growth and inclusive development.

He stressed that the state’s strength lies in unity, strategic planning, inclusive policies, and governance rooted in respect for human freedom.

“Our progress is built not on arrogance but on collective effort, sophistication, and a forward-looking vision,” he said, adding that these principles must guide decisions regarding the 2026 budget.

The Speaker noted that the Assembly has consistently supported the executive in enacting laws that promote socio-economic expansion, strengthen local government structures, and enhance institutional frameworks for effective governance.

He also lauded the governor’s prudence and resilience in navigating economic challenges while sustaining key infrastructural projects that reinforce Lagos’ role as a leading economic hub.

Obasa observed that the proposed budget prioritises critical sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, security, and governance, areas vital for sustaining long-term progress.

He called on lawmakers to diligently examine the bill to ensure that it serves the collective interests of Lagos residents.

Obasa expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his leadership, noting that the Renewed Hope Agenda has delivered tangible national improvements.
